When Jonathan and Justin Fox started Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q in 2004 out of their tiny Brookhaven house, the Atlanta barbecue landscape was very different. Small batch craft barbecue wasn’t as much of a thing as it is today.

After the Fox Bros. opened their DeKalb Avenue restaurant on Labor Day weekend 2007, they became a neighborhood fixture and a destination. Accolades, national food show appearances, a partnership with the Atlanta Falcons, a booming catering business with a commissary kitchen, the Que-osk, and tons of giving back to the community followed.

With the popularity came growing pains and the need to expand. Fox Bros. only seats 140 diners, the parking is limited, and they now make all of their sides at the commissary because the restaurant kitchen can’t keep up with the demand. After looking for a new space for four years, they’ve finally found the right spot for a second Fox Bros. in Selig Enterprises development The Works, which is on the Upper Westside. “The Works works,” says Jonathan. “This one felt right. It’s an Atlanta family-based development crew, and they’re all about their family, just like we’re all about our employees and family.”

A 1920-inspired restaurant from the team behind Vinings' Paces & Vine is set to open next month in Sandy Springs.

The Select restaurant and bar will feature a mix of eclectic entrees and small plates inspired by American and European cuisine, alongside seasonal craft cocktails, local beer on draft and wine, located in the multi-use City Springs development. The city of Sandy Springs, Selig Enterprises and Carter announced the tenants for the City Springs mixed-use project last year.

The restaurant pays homage to Paris’ famed Le Select brasserie – a notable all-day gathering spot for artists and literary giants including Picasso, Hemingway and Fitzgerald – according to a press release.

Executive chef Matt Rainey will oversee the kitchen. Rainey, a Georgia native, most recently served as executive chef at both Rococo Steak and Ceviche Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Tampa, Florida, and worked at restaurants in D.C., Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa, before returning to Georgia. He was mentored early on by well-known restaurateur Pano Karatassos, according to a press release.

Upon opening, the restaurant will host live music nights called "The Select Nights," beginning at the end of dinner into the late evening. Weekend brunch and lunch are to come, according to a press release.

The forthcoming restaurant will feature an open, airy space designed by Smith Hanes Studio. The Select will also include an expansive indoor/outdoor patio enclosed by glass with a terrace overlooking a view of City Springs’ park and fountains. The dining room will seat 75 guests and will be available for private and semi-private events.

A New York post production studio is expanding into Atlanta for the first time.

Uppercut, based in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, is moving into a new adaptive reuse project in Atlanta’s Upper Westside district. It will occupy just under 10,000 square feet in the first phase of The Works, an 80-acre industrial site along Chattahoochee Avenue that is being transformed into a mixed-use project for makers, new businesses, shops and restaurants.

Despite its size — one of the largest privately-owned real estate companies in the Southeast — Selig Enterprises remains, at its core, a family business. It announced Feb. 11 that Greg Selig Lewis would be stepping into the role of senior vice president of development.

Lewis is the nephew of CEO Steve Selig and son of co-owner Cathy Selig. He is among the fourth generation of Seligs in the 100-year-old business.

Prior to joining Selig Enterprises, Lewis founded Innovative Roofing Group, which he ran for 15 years before selling it last year. He is a former board member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and The Epstein School and current board member of Woodward Academy, Roofers Insurance Trust and Selig Enterprises.

“I am proud to welcome Greg,” Steve Selig said. “His experience in the local business community along with his strong track record of entrepreneurship, successfully leading and growing a company, will be an asset to our team.”

Work on 16 townhomes located near the famed Manuel’s Tavern are expected to be complete in late 2020, Selig Enterprises said in a news release.

The townhomes, called 550 North Highland, will have three- and four-bedroom plans that average 2,400 square-foot each, according to the release. The town homes will also have partially covered rooftop patios.
Prices on the homes have not been released. Construction on the residential space, which sits on a former parking lot of the popular Pouncey-Highland bar, began last month.

A popular Atlanta suds maker and a New York-based food hall extraordinaire are joining what Selig Enterprises officials call a thoughtfully curated retail mix at The Works, an under-construction, adaptive-reuse district near Topgolf Atlanta.

Scofflaw Brewing—described by Selig reps as “one of the fastest growing breweries in history”—will open a 9,000-square-foot macro-brewery and tap room at The Works, meant to serve as Scofflaw’s main R&D facility (that’s research and development).

Expect a large outdoor area with games and gathering spaces and plenty of flowing Basement and POG Basement IPAs, plus exclusive releases such as high-gravity stouts, officials said.

Meanwhile, Chattahoochee Food Works will take 16,000 square feet in a prominent piece of the former warehouse district called the Makers Building.

It’s the brainchild of Robert Montwaid, of Gansevoort Consulting, who’s best known for cofounding Gansevoort Market five years ago beside Manhattan’s Chelsea Market.

Featuring food vendors, chef-driven events, a test kitchen, and artisanal market shops, the food hall will mark Montwaid’s first Atlanta venture. (His firm is in design and construction of more than 62,000 square feet of market space between Minneapolis and Chicago, per Selig reps).

The food hall is intended to anchor the restaurant section at The Works, spilling onto a quarter-mile linear park running through phase one called The Spur.

Scofflaw will continue operating its popular brewery at another Selig-owned property nearby, officials noted.

A key piece of what developers and resident groups are calling Atlanta’s Upper Westside, The Works’s 1 million square feet of industrial space has been owned by Selig for seven decades. Eventually, it could encompass 350,000 square feet of retail and entertainment, 500,000 square feet of office space, 500 residences, 200 hotel rooms, and 13 acres of greenspace.

For now, phase one’s 27 acres (with 485,000 total square feet of repurposed space) is on track to open early next year, Selig officials said in a press release.

The first new retail space in the development, a flagship for Ballard Designs, opened last summer.

Elsewhere in the Upper Westside pipeline, TQ-UWS Apartment Homes is moving forward with a 271-unit project near Crest Lawn Memorial Park. And a groundswell of houses and townhomes under construction in the area is expected to complement Westside Village, a $40 million multi-use development that aims to serve nearby neighborhoods with shops, restaurants, and residences.
