Walmart and LA Fitness will open this year in the newly-redeveloped Suburban Plaza on Church Street and North Decatur Road.

Bill Stogner, Senior Vice President with Selig Enterprises which is developing the retail center, told Decaturish that Walmart will likely open November 11, and LA Fitness will open by December 1, though dates are subject to change.

Stogner said HomeGoods and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores will potentially open around March. “Ross Dress for Less will open up probably in June,” Stogner said. “The rest of the center will probably open up the first part of spring.”

“We have a Louisiana-style Cajun restaurant committed to the project,” Stogner said. “We’ve got a pediatric dental company coming in on the Church Street side.”

Some good news on National Coffee Day— a trendy coffee shop is planning a new location in the heart of Midtown.
Dancing Goats Coffee Bar is coming to 33 Peachtree Place, a new mixed-use development from Atlanta-based Wood Partners that’s now under construction at the intersection of West Peachtree Street.

The coffee shop would be roughly 2,000-square-feet with a 600-square-foot sunken patio. It’s set to open in summer 2016.

It would sit across from the Midtown MARTA station and within walking distance to Technology Square, where development is booming with new student housing and the future home of NCR Corp.
“There is so much going on in Midtown — so much excitement and energy — we wanted to be a part of that,” said Mike Ferguson, business development director at Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, the Olympia, Wash.-based company that operates Dancing Goats. “We were attracted to a new build so we could have input on the creation of the space. Finally, we love being in a spot where we can have a lot of student and business customers while still having a strong resident customer base. Our model is to be the neighbor who brews coffee, so it is very important to us to have people living all around us.”

At the turn of the century, Ben J. Massell made a $5k bet on a piece of property in the City of Atlanta that grew into Selig Enterprises, which today controls some 10M SF of commercial real estate. As former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Sr. put it in 1961, “Sherman burned Atlanta and Ben Massell built it back.” Ben was—according to another famous Atlanta mayor, William Hartsfield—a “one-man boom.”

THE FOUNDING FATHER

Ben came from a Lithuanian family that immigrated to the US and opened a grocery store in Atlanta. It was a short-lived enterprise; by 1918, Ben had launched a commercial real estate shop with the purchase of that first parcel. Soon it was apparent he had a knack for real estate, developing storefronts and commercial buildings throughout Atlanta, which was discovering its power as an economic engine. At the same time, the Selig side of the family arrived in the US from Germany, setting up a chemical business here. These two families would not become one until 1939, when Steve's father, Simon “Slick” Selig, married Ben's daughter, Caroline Massell.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are pouring into the Westside, which has transformed in recent years from a rundown industrial space to a hip, walkable community that ties together Midtown, Buckhead and downtown.

In the last decade, $1 billion or more has been invested in the Westside, said Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown, who teamed up with Westbridge Partners to redevelop one of the key projects in the area, White Provision. Chris Faussemagne, principal of Westbridge Partners, said at least $250 million in projects have come online since 2012.

Several developers with projects in the area likened it to New York City’s Meatpacking District.

“It’s a former industrial area with that used to have a lot of large warehouses and manufacturing uses, and it’s changing,” said Scott Selig, vice president of Selig Enterprises. “A lot of residential units are going in, a lot of retail, restaurants and entertainment. It’s becoming a place for people to live, and it’s very close to downtown, which makes it appealing.”

A giant 48-year-old outdoor sculpture at the center of Atlanta’s Fulton Industrial Boulevard corridor has been refurbished back to its original “sunrise red” luster.

The commercial painting and coating company Benise-Dowling & Associates Inc. of Decatur completed work this month restoring the Atlanta Gateway sculpture, a geometric work built in 1967 at the intersection of Great Southwest Parkway and Fulton Industrial Boulevard in conjunction with a planned industrial park.

The $40,000 restoration was financed by the Fulton Industrial Community Improvement District.

“The revitalization of the Gateway is symbolic of the CID’s efforts to return Fulton Industrial Boulevard to its stature as a catalyst for economic development both regionally and internationally,” said Kent Walker, secretary of the CID board and vice president of Selig Enterprises Inc.

LAS VEGAS — About 34,000 top real estate professionals are gathered in Sin City for the annual RECon convention, one of the key gatherings for the top minds in retail.

The International Council of Shopping Centers convention is where retailers, brokers, lawyers and developers meet, talk shop and plant seeds for new stores, new complexes and property sales. Some of the top development groups with strong metro Atlanta ties are here, including Selig Enterprises, Simon, General Growth Properties, North American Properties, Fuqua Development and OliverMcMillan.

Virtually all of the powerhouse real estate services groups are here too, including CBRE, JLL and The Shopping Center Group, as well as law firms like Hartman Simons and Arnall Golden Gregory.

MARTA would like to see more retail and residential space created near the Arts Center station and the Downtown Connector.

MetLife has acquired eight acres of land near the Arts Center MARTA station which it hopes to turn into a mixed-use development to revitalize the area.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the insurance giant’s latest purchase was an 0.7 acre plot at 17th, Spring, and West Peachtree streets. The collection of land could be converted by MetLife and Selig Enterprises into a complex meeting the desires of MARTA to build a high-rise residential tower, street-level retail, and a hotel adjacent to the Arts Center station.
